John Mellencamp

It has been four years since John Mellencamp released a studio album of all new songs. That album, “Trouble No More”, was issued in June of 2003. But the wait for the new CD “Freedom’s Road” is over as the album is now available in stores and on the Internet. A life long resident of the heartland in Indiana, John has created music based on American themes and mores throughout his career. But there’s always more to his songs than what appears on the surface. Dig a little deeper into some of his classics like “Pink Houses” and “Country Gentleman” and there is an underlying acerbic wit and critical observation present in most of his work. More information regarding the new album “Freedom’s Road” is available at Mellencamp.com.

The ubiquitous first single, “Our Country” is a song Mellencamp has been performing live for several years, very often serving as the opening song. The tune began appearing on ads for Chevy Silverado trucks and it is virtually impossible to watch television, especially football games, without hearing the Woody Guthrie style anthem. But once again, dig a bit deeper and not everything is as rosy in our country as it might seem upon first listen. Mellencamp, long a supporter of the “little guy” whether it is the independent farmer or small business owner, is a master of double entendre and is deft at composing lyrics that make one question exactly what his observation and viewpoint might be. Then there are songs such as the new hidden track on “Freedom’s Road” titled “Rodeo Clown”. That song is about our current president and is about as straightforward as it gets while still remaining in the patented Mellencamp style.
